Inside RecessMeasure inside width in several places, particularly at the top of recess. Check if the plasterwork
tapers in or out.
Measure inside drop in several places.
Visualise & determine your side clearance. 5 to 10mm per side is normal.
Allow for tiling, architraves, picture hanger dado, BT sockets, alarm sensors, window handles etc etc
Outside RecessIf you would like your roman blinds to hang outside your window recess, you need to decide the size you prefer.
We suggest the blinds should be at least 75mm (3”) beyond the the recess at sides and bottom.
The top can be even bigger (150 to 250mm) if you wish the blind to clear the recess to give maximum daylight
For splayed bays
Imagine or draw a line on the cill that represents the position of the fabric as it will hang (ie not tight to the frame).
The cill board usually has an angle joint. Measure your width for the middle blind along the line to where it intersects with this angle joint. Deduct 30mm
and this is your blind size to allow the folds to have minimum snagging on the side blinds.
The side blinds are similarly measured to get maximum coverage where the window meets the wall. Deduct 20mm from this size.
As in all things in life, you sometimes have to compromise and these allowances are open for discussion and the circumstances of your window.
For square bays
We advise that the front blind runs the full width and the side blinds reduced to allow fabric of front blind to fold. In many open bays there is freedom to
move the side blinds to get the best position to reduce snagging.
The gap at window-wall junction may be more difficult to cover on square bays.
Notes:
For accuracy it is preferable that all window dimensions are taken with a steel tape or rule.
