Fixing Instructions for Romulus Roman Blinds
Fixing & Assembly Instructions for Romulam Roman Blind Kits
Romulus Mk2 is often referred to as the ‘sideways’ spools lifting system

The brackets have a release tab. The rail will simply ‘click’ into the rail. To release the rail, peel off the fabric cover and with upward push with the thumb on the tab (behind the rail) the rail will twist off forwards easily.
Top fixing
Make sure that position of brackets do not coincide with tape spools or friction unit.
Fit brackets to the head of the window reveal with No 8 posidrive pan head screws {can be self tappers or wood screws. The twinfast or superscrew type
is not recommended
Lintols can be of wood, concrete, steel section or the steel catnic type. Usually there is a cladding of plasterboard to which a skim of plaster has been applied.
Wood | Screw straight in, may need 3.2mm pilot hole |
Concrete | Needs hammer drill and plastic plugs to suit No 8 screws |
Steel section | Use 3.7 or 3.8mm twist drill and use self tapper screws |
Catnic type lintols | Use 3.6 or 3.7.. twist drill & use self tapper screws. |
Catnic is a generic word that is a steel lintol of various steel shapes welded together. They usually have perforations or slots to allow plaster or cement to key onto the metal. Ensure you hit metal and that you do not go through one of the slots which are about 25mm long x 5mm wide punched into the metal in rows. If there is a 25 to 40mm space between the plasterboard and the lintol then metal (not plastic) ROTOPLUGS can be used. A shot of ‘no-nails’ mastic can be injected into the pre formed hole as added security.
If top fixing, a spacer washer is required to allow the rail to tilt as it clicks in, alternatively fit brackets to rail, peel fabric off (the front cover will hang on the tapes) and screw up as a total unit.
Face fix
Pvc is not an ideal material to fix blinds to. Top fix should always be first choice at pvc windows.
As for top fix but face fix to wood or pvc window frame. See previous note on top fixing. Ensure blind will lift without snagging on handles & remove keys on locking handles.
Hanging the Blind
Peel off the looptape that is on the back of the textile cover away from the rail so that it all the fabric hangs on the tapes. This will enable you to hold
the rail comfortably & to see the brackets as you tilt & click on the rail.
Click rail to brackets, starting at centre bracket if more than 3 brackets.
Centralise within the window space.
With the bunched cover pulled almost to the top, ensure tapes are aligned from tape spools into dee rings by sliding dee rings in the special plastic ‘no sew’ rods
Attach the finished roman blind cover to the fitted rail by pressing the looptape to the hooktape
It is essential that….…….
There are equal turns of tape in the spools, otherwise the blind will never become level.
*That excess tape is removed, otherwise tape can double wind inside the spool and tilt the cover.
If this happens, let the blind fully down. Pull on the tapes whilst letting down so as to release any double wind. Continue to wind down further until the
tape starts to travel back up again. Tweek chain to find this absolute bottom position. Release each nipple/ adjuster & slide it up the tape until 10
– 15 mm below last ring, tighten or part snap shut and run blind up & down to adjust final level. Fully snap shut the adjuster. Cut off the remaining
tape. All the tapes should be at absolute bottom position at the same time.
If they are not then there are not equal turns…even half a turn difference
can tilt the blind!
If it is inside the reveal, you need to peel off the fabric, remove the track
from brackets, lay on table or floor with face of fabric downwards, release the rod capture screw located on the friction unit, slide out the square rod,
pull out the tapes to their end and re-insert the square rod (but not into friction). Rewind the spools using finger & thumb to rotate the square rod. Get assistance
to apply gentle resistance to the tapes so that they spool in firmly. If outside reveal you may be able to slide out the hex rod to adjust without removing the
blind. All the tapes must feed into the spools in the same direction!
Now insert square rod into friction unit & tighten capture screw.
Run blind up & down to test for level or bow at the cill. Adjust if necessary by again prising apart the plastic tape clip at the bottom of the tapes, pull tape through and snap shut
We also suggest that the connecting link (not fitted on the 5:1 ratio units) on the side chain is set at a position so that the blind will only lift when the chain is pulled in one direction. The best position for this seems to be when it has pulled the blind up perhaps only half a panel so the user realises they are pulling the wrong side of the chain loop. This should prevent heavy handed users jambing the metal link into the friction housing.
To do this, Let the blind down, remove the square rod from the friction unit & pull chain so that metal link is 50 to 100 mm down from the friction on the rightmost chain. This is best done after the tape shortening procedure.
The 1:1 friction is intended for fast lift of blinds upto 3 kg in weight, over 3kg will require the slower action of 5:1 friction which can lift upto 4.5kg. For blind weights above 4.5kg we can purpose make side chain geared lifters using the Remus system.
If your blind weight is in the region of 3.5 – 4.5kg then extra tape spools are essential to spread the load. As a guide, a 5kg blind should have at least 4 spools

Face fixing
As for top fix but face fix to wood or pvc window frame.
Ensure blind will lift without snagging on handles & remove keys on locking handles.
Use plastic modesty blocks from DIY shop to pack off to miss handles.
Assembly of the kit
Peel off the loop tape strip to be sewn onto textile cover
The rail has to be cut to your required length using a junior or fine bladed hack-saw. Refit end caps to the Velcro rail, mark cord eye positions.
For sewn-on lining & tape rod pockets your brass cord rings must be sewn on at least 50mm from the edge.
Click the main cord guides onto back of the headrail, position approx 50mm from the outside edges. The small screws must contact the wider lip of the back face. Turn the screws with a ‘0’ size posidrive screwdriver so screw point prevents sideways movement of lock & cord guide eyes. Do not over tighten.
Position the cord lock 10mm from either the right or left outside edge to produce either a right or left hand pull and tighten the screw.
Before fitting the lock to the rail feed cords through the metal gates of the lock, so cord passes over front of toothed barrel. Tie off with plastic acorn. The other ends of the cords will be fed down back of the blind through the rings and secured with a knot on the last ring.
Rail is now ready for fabric.
Press your fabric onto the hook rail and cord up
Hanging the Blind
Peel off the blind cover away from the rail so that all the fabric hangs on the cords. This will enable you to hold the rail comfortably & to see the brackets as you click on the rail.
Click rail to brackets, starting at centre bracket if more than 3 brackets
With the bunched cover pulled almost to the top, ensure rings are aligned with cord eyes and is square with rail by sliding dee rings in the special plastic
‘no sew’ rods.
Attach the finished roman blind cover to the fitted rail by pressing the looptape back to the hooktape
Run blind up & down to test for level at cill. Adjust if necessary at the acorn end of the cords and secure with a knot in the acorn when level.
